Maintaining Joint Health: What Happens to Your Joints as You Age and What are Your Options?

December 15, 2021

Ever wonder why joint pain is felt by those who tend to be older? Why those who actually purchase joint health products are - overwhelmingly – seniors or adults, 40 years and older? It begs the question…what happens to our joints as we age that makes us seek joint health products in the first place? And, most importantly, what can we take to help with our joint health?

It’s no secret, as we get older, things begin to feel different. That couldn’t be more true for our joints as they undergo a series of changes that force us to experience dreadful joint pain and overall joint discomfort. But why? What in our joints change that has such a major effect on us. Well, according to  Merck Manual and Achieve Clinical, the cartilage in our joints – the rubber like connective tissue that serves as a cushion and helps make movement easier – begins to wear thin. Components of the cartilage become altered, making the joint less resilient and more susceptible to damage. Therefore, in some people, the surfaces of the joint do not move or slide as well as they used to.

Additionally, joints become stiffer because the connective tissue within ligaments and tendons becomes more rigid and brittle. This change also limits the range of motion of our joints. In some cases, the cartilage can even degenerate completely, leaving the joints bare or bone on bone. The more joints lose lubrication from deteriorating cartilage, the more the bones begin to rub against each other causing pain and swelling.

This is a serious problem for people with Osteoarthritis ( OA) because  according to WebMD, it causes the cartilage in joints to deteriorate at an even faster rate. Osteoarthritis, is the most common form of Arthritis and is a degenerative joint disease. It is formed not only by increased age, but also other factors such as obesity, previous joint injury, overuse of the joint, weak thigh muscles, and genes. This is not to be confused with Rheumatoid Arthritis, which is an autoimmune disease where the immune system attacks the body and the joints causing inflammation and severe joint pain.

So what can we do? With so many joint health supplements on the market today, do you know which one you should take? Do you know which is best to help support your joint health? Well, when in doubt, always look at the research. To date, many different studies have been done using Glucosamine and Chondroitin ingredients. However, the studies have used different forms of the ingredients (Glucosamine Sulfate vs. Glucosamine Hydrochloride) and different quality levels (premium and pharmaceutical grade vs. not). All this caused inconsistent results among a variety of different studies.

Nevertheless, the positive studies have shown us several things; high quality Glucosamine Sulfate at 1,500 mg is effective in supporting joint health. In addition, Chondroitin Sulfate at 800 mg – 1200 mg is effective in supporting joint health in the knees and hands. That being said, it makes sense to combine these ingredients in the same pill right!? Wrong...A 2010 study showed that when Glucosamine and Chondroitin were combined into the same formulation, a 40% decrease in bioavailability was noticed, meaning the ingredients were not as effective together and that they were fighting each other. If both ingredients were to be given, it is best to separate them into different pills.

The truth is, not many companies provide this information to their customers because – frankly – it’s bad for business. Tons of products are offered in the market today that don’t use the right ingredients or offer the right quality and dosage amounts. What customers need is a company that uses the studies to see what actually works for joint health and apply this to their product line. A company that attends medical conferences every month and has a network of over 10,000 doctors that recommend its products. What customers need is a company that they can rely on to give them only the quality supplements they need and deserve.
